Saturday 10.30 - 12.30: Recorder Workshop for adults and children, led by Annabel Knight

Come and play recorders under Annabel's expert guidance. There will be parts for all ages, abilities and sizes of recorder, to rehearse a Battle Pavane by Susato and a Minuet by Boismortier, to be performed at the end of the workshop.

Saturday 2.15 - 4.30: Polychoral Workshop for singers and players of Renaissance strings and winds, led by Bruce Saunders and Theresa Caudle.

An opportunity to experience glorious music designed to fill every corner of spacious buildings like St Mark’s Venice. There’ll be no time for note-bashing, so you’ll need reasonable sight-reading skills as we put together choirs and instruments for performance at the end of the afternoon. The music will include works for one, two and three choirs by Giovanni Gabrieli, Victoria and Monteverdi.

Instrumentalists: please note that the pitch will be A=440.

Sunday 2.00 - 3.45: Workshop on Chant with Professor Emma Hornby of Bristol University.

Emma Hornby and members of the Bristol University Music Department Schola Cantorum will lead workshop participants in preparing and singing plainchant Latin Vespers for the second Sunday after Easter. All ages and standards welcome, as long as you can sing in tune and from staff notation.

Sunday 2.30 - 4.00: From cello to bass viol — a workshop for senior school pupils with Jane Francis.

How easy is it to migrate from cello to viol? What are the challenges to be overcome? Do you want to play the Bach sonatas for viola da gamba on the instrument they were written for? Do you enjoy playing continuo lines? Would you like to explore a whole new realm of chamber music in the form of Renaissance and Jacobean consorts?

In this workshop we will compare the different shapes of the cello and viol bow, explore the viol bow hold, appreciate the different directions of the primary and secondary bow strokes of the two instruments, and discuss tone production and the shape of the note formed by basic bow strokes. We will consider and compare the left-hand position, the different tuning of the open strings, and the subsequent fingering system. The different genres within the viol repertoire will be discussed.
